300 U.S. 379 (1937), upheld a state law setting minimum wages for women and children, thus overturning two earlier rulings (Adkins v. Children's Hospital and Morehead v. New York ex. rel Tipaldo, 298 U.S. 587 (1936)) and placing limits on the freedom to contract. Justice George Sutherland wrote in dissent that setting a minimum wage for women constituted arbitrary discrimination based on gender, a position many feminists of the era supported.
