  1. codification of the civil law enacted by the Louisiana state legislature in 1825. Modeled on the Code Napoleon, the Civil Code codified the French and Spanish laws considered still in force in Louisiana at that time. The Civil Code has undergone revision by legislative act numerous times since 1825, with the most recent comprehensive revision being in 1986. The Civil Code contains the basic law of persons, property, obligations, donations, and successions that Louisiana statutes must accord with and Louisiana judges must apply in deciding cases.
