Economic Opportunity Act

Law
  1. provided funds for vocational training, created a Job Corps to train youths in conservation camps and urban centers, encouraged community action programs, extended loans to small businessmen and farmers, established VISTA, a domestic program similar to the Peace Corps, and created the Head Start program, a program that was designed to prepare children for success in public schools and that included medical, dental, social service, nutritional, and psychological care. The Act was repealed in 1981, but many of the programs established under it continue to exist.
